Manchester United (vs. West Bromwich Albion aftermatch, 280913)

Manchester United 1 - 2 West Bromwich Albion
(Rooney 57’; Amalfitano 54’, Berahino 67’)

Line Up: De Gea; Jones, Ferdinand, Evans, Buttner; Nani, Carrick, Anderson, Kagawa; Rooney (C), Chicharito.
Subs: Amos; Evra; Fellaini, Valencia, Januzaj; Welbeck, van Persie.

David couldn’t do much at the goals he conceded. Morgan was absolutely free, & Saidi’s shot taken when his goal was very opened. He did make a great save from Morgan’s free kick though.

Rio was very terrible tonight. He was very slow, couldn’t catch up with opponent player’s speed at most times, responsible for both goals conceded. Jonny too wasn’t at his best. He looked weak, & couldn’t cope with Victor’s strength. Phil & Alex didn’t have lots to do in defence, while in offence they were awful. Constantly lost the ball, either miss passes or bad dribbles, even though eventually Alex got the assist for Wayne’s free kick because he was the one brought down.

Carrick's play once again showed that he needed a good partner in the middle. He played his usual level, but Anderson on the other hand, even though his movement in support of Carrick was pretty good, couldn’t produce good passes & his dribbles was way too easy to read. His through passes especially never got through. Shinji played a good football in the first half. Problem was, as a left winger, he waste much of his time not on the left flank. His movements was more like an attacking midfielder, which in my opinion was the reason why he replaced by Adnan in second half. The youngster played fairly, shifted from left to right flank in the second half, but his overall performance was average. Nani is MU’s best player tonight in my opinion. He creates a lot of troubles for WBA’s defence. In the first half most of the times he stayed out wide, while in the second half he shifted from right to left. He produced some good crosses from the right, and cuts inside good from the left. He opened up WBA’s defence in the second half with his dribbles and passes throughout the middle. True he made some mistakes too, but overall he was MU’s best player.

Wayne pretty much anonymous throughout the game. His goal from free kick was good, his movements was not too bad, but he couldn’t really deliver much as MU talisman. He missed at least two good chances where his free header was too easy to caught by Boaz, and when he opted to pass (one-two) Nani with the opposition goal opened within his range. Javier though was way more awful than him. In one of MU’s best chance tonight from the counter, he seemed foolishly didn’t want to find an onside position even though he was absolutely free. He also couldn’t connect with couple of very good crosses from Nani in the first half.

So, Moyes got a lot of work to do. He needs to get rid of Rio, Alex, Phil, Anderson, and Javier. He needs to find a suitable position for Shinji, better partner for Carrick in the middle, and keeps Nani as a starting.

My best line up (on paper): 4-4-2
De Gea; Rafael, Smalling, Vidic, Evra; Nani, Carrick, Kagawa, Young; van Persie, Rooney.
